Watches of Wales' Own Jordan Sakkas to Compete in Commonwealth Games 2022

June 29, 2022

At Watches of Wales, we are very lucky to have had some extraordinary athletes frequent our store. Famous footballers, rugby players, and boxers have stepped foot into our shop. However, we are even more proud to have a Commonwealth athlete within our own midst: Watches of Wales' own Jordan Sakkas is due to compete in the weightlifting event at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games at this end of this month.

This is not Jordan's first time on the international weightlifting stage. He made his Commonwealth Games debut in Australia in 2018, following on from a silver medal win at the 2015 Youth Games and in the same year, another silver win at the World Youth Weightlifting Championships. His biggest achievement to date is securing gold at the 2022 British Championships, making Jordan the current number 1 in Britain in the men’s 109kg class.

Whilst it is no accident that Jordan ended up with us - thanks to his outstanding knowledge in horology - he didn't actually always intend on becoming an international weightlifter:

"My journey started from playing rugby, representing Wales in U16 rugby. I wanted to improve my rugby strength and power, so I started training in 2013."

Since then, Jordan managed to enjoy a strong career in weightlifting thanks to his hard training and determination: "Focus is never something I’ve particularly struggled with. I try and focus on the processes that I hone in on every day in training and allow the aggression and intensity to build organically."

"Training itself is a massive source of enjoyment. Turning up everyday and seeing people I care about at the gym makes training the easy part. It’s the consistent discipline around that with food, rehab, sleep, hydration etc. that is most challenging, but my long term goals motivate me to stay disciplined in these areas."

"My goal is to win the Commonwealth Games."

We wish Jordan all the best for the Games at the end of July!
